My name is Katia
Franzosi Bymers. My parents are of Japanese and Italian descent and I was
born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. (Note: In the English language, Brazil
is normally and properly spelt with a “z” and in Portuguese it is
spelled with an “s”.)
I met my husband while he was living in Brazil on a business
assignment. My husband is a UW Madison engineer grad, whom has worked in
International Business for more than 25 years. We met in Brazil, got married,
and moved to Madison, Wisconsin in 1994.
Together we have two children,
Robert and Jessica. We have been raising them bilingually and bi-culturally; I
dedicated this book to my children. By writing this book hopefully they will
always remember where their mother and the other half of their family came
from.
The sentence: “My Mom is from Brazil” is what my children
tell their friends as a way to excuse my “heavy accent”.I always thought that was a very funny way
for them to explain why I sounded and looked so different from the other moms
around.
Since 2006 I have worked as
a World Language teacher in Waunakee, Wisconsin teaching grades K to 6. I have
noticed that the resources focusing on the Brazilian Culture and the Portuguese
language are minimal for that age group.
I’m hoping this book will be a
great resource for my students and something that they will cherish for years to come.
“My
Mom is from Brazil”speaks from
the heart of a foreign mother to the heart of her American/Brazilian children.
I hope this book will help my
Brazilian friends in Wisconsin and all the “Brazilian Moms” out there, that

Meu
nome é Katia Franzosi Bymers. Nasci e cresci em São Paulo, Brasil. Minha mãe é descendente
japonesa e meu pai descendente italiano. Sou casada com Gary, um americano do
estado de Wisconsin, quem conheci em 1993 quando ele morou em São Paulo por
dois anos a trabalho, pois sempre trabalhou com Comercio Exterior e viaja muito,
apesar de ser formado em engenharia na Universidade de Wisconsin-Madison. Nós
nos casamos em 1994 e temos dois filhos o Robert, 19 anos, e a Jessica, 16 anos,
que nasceram e cresceram em Madison expostos às duas línguas: o português e o
inglês.
Sou
professora bilíngue de inglês e de espanhol em Waunakee, Wisconsin, desde 2006
e percebi que não há muita literatura infantil bilíngue em inglês-português. “My
Mom Is from Brazil” (2015), com tradução livre em português, “ Minha Mãe É
Brasileira”, nasceu de uma mãe estrangeira que tem o coração divido entre os dois
países. O livro é inspirado em filhos e filhas de mães brasileiras que nasceram
no exterior e o título, “My Mom Is from Brazil”, foi criado a partir de uma
frase que escutei muito de meus filhos quando ainda eram crianças, pois eles sentiam,
e sentem, a necessidade de explicar aos seus amigos americanos o porquê do meu
sotaque e da minha pronúncia serem tão diferentes dos das mães americanas. Por
isso, espero que este livro ajude não somente as mães brasileiras de Wisconsin,
mas como também outras mães que criam seus filhos no exterior e que desejam
divulgar e preservar mais sua cultura.
Dedico
esse livro aos meus filhos, ao meu marido e a meus pais. Espero que meus filhos
nunca se esqueçam de suas raízes as quais sempre procuramos manter acesa em
suas vidas.
